Reps Speaker Calls For Vigorous Prosecution of Electoral Offenders
Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has disclosed that the National Assembly will pass the bill to establish Electoral Offences Commission before the end of the ninth national assembly to address the lack of Prosecution of Electoral Offenders.
Gbajabiamila made this disclosure while addressing Members of the Green Chamber on Tuesday at the resumed plenary of the House after the election break.
He noted that there were reported incidents of thuggery, voter intimidation and suppression.
Gbajabiamila commended the (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, for his hard work and commitment but noted that there is need for an objective assessment of the elections by the commission to ensure there is an improvement in subsequent ones.
Gbajabiamila also noted that the 2022 Electoral Act has been particularly instrumental in improving the elections process, especially the use of technology to facilitate voter accreditation and transmission of results.
