Sangana Community
Weep Over Rising Flood Sea Level.
Sangana community in
Bayelsa State is under serious ecological threat induced by rising sea level
due to the persistent rainfall in the area..
Residents of the
community, in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, have now called on
the state and the federal governments, especially the Niger Delta Development
Commission, to intervene in the surging sea level that has destroyed homes,
properties and livelihoods.
Sangana is an oil rich
coastal community with over seven multinational oil companies operating
consistently over the past decades, but is faced with constant devastating
surging water level from the Atlantic ocean, and major occupations of the
people of the community are farming and fishing.
However, the surging sea
level has put their sources of income and livelihoods, including residence and
properties, at risk, while, the multinational oil companies in the community
include Chevron Field, Shell Field, Atala Field, Agbami Field, Conoil Field,
Bonga Field, Madu Field, First E&P Field, among others.
While seeking the
intervention of the state and the federal governments, the people of the
community carried out a peaceful protest recently, towards addressing the
health challenges caused by oil explorations by multinational oil companies
operating in the area.
A statement, issued by
the former chairman of Brass Local Government Area, Hon. (Dr) Bello Bina,
called, on the state and the federal government to intervene in proffering
lasting solutions to the challenges facing the people of the community
urgently, while, appealing to the state and the federal government, especially
the NDDC and other intervention agencies to come to the aid of the people of
the community.
