International Day of Peace
End racism, Build peace - Ensuring National Unity in Nigeria

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed globally on the 21st of September. The UN General Assembly declared this as a day to strengthen the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

Achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms. It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their race.

As conflicts continue to erupt across the globe, causing people to flee, As economies suffer, we have seen hate speech and violence directed at racial minorities.

We all have a role to play in fostering peace. We can work to dismantle the structures that entrench disunity in our midst. We can support movements for equality and human rights everywhere. We can speak out against hate speech – both offline and online.

Speaking on ensuring national unity as a panacea for peace in Nigeria, a legal practitioner, Oforleta Chibuzor Esq. who appeared on ATN society watch said until their is equity, justice and fairness at all levels in the country, the nation will keep wishing to enjoy real peace.

Oforleta said, "the kind of peace we've had in Nigeria is what they call 'grave- yard peace'. You cannot have peace when there is no justice, equity and fairness. No matter how you try to preach peace, there's no way you can have peace. So, if you want to have peace in the right sense of it, we should start looking at being fair to everybody in the country, doing justice and equity (sic)."

He said, "we only talk about racism when it has to do with the white and blacks. But, we have racism in the country, even in this our Rivers State. Somebody is discriminated on the basis of, okay, this person is Ikwerre, this person is Ogoni (sic), it is racism, but we don't look at those ones. I am not trying to justify racism, but what I am trying to say is, Charity should begin at home, we have to put our houses in order. If you want peace, you have to carry everybody along."
