Ahead of the 2023 February 25 and March 11, 2023, national and state elections, analysts have warned that persistent insecurity in Imo state will cause the state to risk 10 percent voter turnout in the election.

Alelumhe, a guest on ATN Politics, while commenting on the killing of Hon.
Chris Ohizu, the sole administrator of Ideato Local Government, wonder why an
ordinary citizen who has no security protection would want to risk his live for
the sake of the election. He said if the insecurity persist the state may not
record up to 10 percent in the election.
He said, “Somebody
who is chief security office will be treated this way, what will happen to an
ordinary person. People are not going to come out to vote. If those who are
protected are not safe is it the ordinary man who has no single police that
will and to come out vote? Honestly speaking, Imo in the last election, I think
the had 20 percent turn for vote. This time around a pray they have 10 percent.”
Mr. Haruna Salami,
another guest on the programme said the government if Imo state has failed in
its primary responsibility.
“Imo has
been notorious for this – is it the burning of INEC offices or the killing of
presidential adviser, Gullak? This are too many. I don’t know what the governor
is doing. The primary role of government is to protect lives and property. They
killed this man (Chris Ohizu) and the burn his property, so what else is the
government doing?” he said.
Speaking
further, Mr. Alelumhe expressed on confidence in the capacity of government to contend
the insecurity in Imo but decry the lack of political will.
He said, “The
State is so powerful. If the state decides today and say we want to stop this
and mobilized its resources they will succeed. But the trust of the matter is
that they are just...let’s leave then. Have you seen the governor been attack?
No. Because he has fortified this thing. Have seen the number of military in
his convoy?”
Mr. Ohizu
was beheaded by his abductors on Friday after setting ablaze his residence. A
video footage of his beheading surfaced online after 6 million ransom was paid.
The police in the state is investing the killing.
