Several shops have been gutted by fire at the Mgbuka Obosi Old Motor Spare
Parts Market in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Eyewitness said, the inferno affected three shops, including a provision store,
and attributed the cause of the fire to a power surge as a result of a poor
electrical connection in one of the burnt structures.
The chairman of the market, Samuel Ifurunwa, who visited the scene on
Sunday, said he was alerted to the incident at about 3 am on Saturday, while
the market security operatives had quickly swung into rescue operations.
In his reaction, President General of the Anambra State Markets
Amalgamated Traders Association, Humphrey Anuna, said he rushed to the
scene to see the extent of destruction, lamenting that most of the fire
incidents were caused by illegal connections, and advised that structures
should not be put under high-tension cables, while, citing the Nnobi market
fire incident as a case study.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Media and Publicity Unit of the
Anambra State Fire Service said firefighters, led by the Fire Chief, Chukwudi
Chiketa, were deployed immediately to the scene of the incident and they
battled to contain the fire.
