The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has said that one of the ways to achieve food security in Nigeria is to move from disaster management to risk management.
Deputy Director at the office of emegency and resilience at (FAO) Mr. Shukri Ahmed who said this in Abuja at an interactive section with agricultural stakeholders and government also noted that preventing the disasters and it impact will reduce Loss of revenue and improve crop and food productions.
The FAO organized this meeting with government and development partners to support government of member states in terms of achieving sustainable agricultural transformations with a view to meeting the target agenda of 2023 for sustainable development goals of zero hunger and poverty.
Mr. Shukri Ahmed said that the FAO is working with the government at all levels to build resilience with the effects of disasters and how it can be benefit the smallholder farmers by bringing the technical nohow of FAO to support the government and to implement the strategy and produce and action plan.
The FAO representative in Nigeria Mr. Fred Kafeero the aim of the meeting is to interact with stakeholders in the country with a view to understanding the issue affecting farmers in the rural areas and mobilize for intervention.
Mr. Andrew Kwasari senior special assistant to the President on agriculture spoke about the none available of insurance coverage for small holder farmers in Nigeria for their farm products he said their must be actions to implement government policies to support small holder farmers.
