STATE OF THE NATION: opposition lawmakers will proceed with Buhari's impeachment threat as National Assembly resumes tomorrow, Analyst claims
National Assembly

The opposition lawmakers will be pressing on with their impeachment threat against President Muhammadu Buhari as the National Assembly resumes tomorrow after a near two months’ recess.

This was the submission of Mr. Haruna Salami, a guest on ATN Politics while commenting on whether or not the opposition lawmakers will proceed to the threat they issued before they went on recess.

Mr. Salami observed that the opposition Senators will not backtrack on their earlier position as that will be considered by Nigerians as to have been bought by the APC.

On whether the security situation in the country has improved, since it was a precondition for the president to fulfill before the lawmakers will backtrack on their move, Mr. Salami noted that very little seem to have been achieved. He cited the recent attack on the convoy of senator Andy Uba as a case in point that shows that the situation is still bad.

He expressed doubt on the completion of the process if it's eventually initiated. He also pointed out the over bearing influence of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan on the process and the hanging fate of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, whose fate is at the mercies of the ruling party and the president as some of the likely hurdles.

Opposition Senators before proceeding on recess on 27of July had given President six weeks to improve on the deplorable security situation in the country or risk an impeachment notice. Critics have however, described the move as a waste of time given the constitutional hurdle associated with the process.
